On Oct. 17, 1973, the first oil embargo plunged the auto industry into a new world.
It was a world of rising fuel prices, shifting consumer demands and massive changes to powertrains and vehicles.
It brought, directly or indirectly, a lengthy list of new acronyms and names: OPEC, CAFE, mpg, Honda, Infiniti, NUMMI, Smart, EV and EcoBoost.
The Oct. 15 issue of Automotive News will look at the impact of that historic event. The package will include a special column by Editor-in-Chief Keith Crain, who had taken charge of Automotive News just two years before the oil embargo, as well as online links to archival stories on the topic.
