Mini will get BMW's new turbocharged three-cylinder engine in upcoming models. The new family of engines for both brands also includes a four-cylinder model, BMW confirmed.
The automaker won't say which future models get the three-cylinder, other than the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid that arrives in the spring of 2014. In the i8, the three-cylinder will be the gasoline-powered component of the gasoline-electric hybrid drivetrain.
In a Mini, the 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo presumably would be capable of powering the car by itself.
