Using his trademark salty language, former Chrysler Chairman Lee Iacocca once marveled at the relationship Richard E. Dauch had with Chrysler's legion of foremen in the 1980s. Dauch, who died this month at 71, was Iacocca's manufacturing honcho before leaving to lead the group that formed American Axle in 1994.
"Dauch did a helluva job," Iacocca said in the 2004 interview. "He's such a tough guy, a former Purdue fullback. But he was great with people. I would walk through a plant with that son of a b---- Dauch, and they'd say, 'Hiya, Dick,' and he'd say, 'How are the kids?' and he'd name the kids -- and I'd ask, 'How do you remember all this s---?'
"He'd say, 'It's my management team, and I get to know them.'"
