DETROIT -- General Motors has named former Volkswagen and Volvo executive Stefan Jacoby head of international operations, responsible for more than 100 markets in Africa, Asia Pacific and the Middle East.
The 55-year-old German replaces Tim Lee, who will become chairman of GM China.
Jacoby stepped down as CEO of Volvo Car Corp. late last year after suffering a mild stroke. During a 30-year automotive career, he has had key positions at Mitsubishi and Volkswagen, including CEO of Volkswagen of America Inc.
Jacoby will report to GM CEO Dan Akerson and begin today, Aug. 5.
Lee, 62, moves to the China role after nearly four years in charge of the international unit. He will remain head of global manufacturing. Bob Socia, 59, president of GM China, will continue to report to Lee.
Jacoby said GM's customer focus and momentum are two reasons he is joining the automaker. "The GM team has plans to win in every market," he said in the statement, "and I'm eager to contribute."
