You could argue that the Bentley-like Volkswagen Phaeton was always a lot of car for the money, even at full price. Now it's a virtual steal in the used-car market.
VW plans to bring a redesigned Phaeton to the United States (See Page 6), even though the first generation was a flop in North America. A $66,000 starting price for a Volkswagen was the death knell for the first Phaeton, but things have changed since it was last sold here in 2006. A few mainstream brands now offer premium vehicles, and you can drop 67 grand on a Hyundai Equus or even $100,000 on a Nissan GTR.
Still, the idea of an uber-expensive VW may be a nonstarter. Several used first-generation Phaetons are available on eBay Motors for what appear to be terrific prices. A 2006 Phaeton with 36,000 one-owner miles was being offered in Arizona last week for $25,000 or best offer -- about the same price as a new Jetta. The least expensive Phaeton -- one with 124,000 miles -- sold for just $6,600.
