INGOLSTADT, Germany -- Another member of the Audi A3 family is expected to reach the market in 2016 or 2017: a crossover known internally as the "elevated space vehicle" that targets BMW's planned front-wheel-drive compact crossover.
Engineers are working on a concept for a high-roof vehicle that will have either five or seven seats.
Audi has not decided whether to display the vehicle at the Frankfurt show in September. What's unclear is whether new technology chief Ulrich Hackenberg will get deeply involved in its development.
The approximately 177-inch vehicle is based on the Volkswagen Group's modular MQB architecture and will be built at Audi's headquarters plant here. There is no official name yet, but insiders are calling it the Spacer.
