NEW YORK -- Chevrolet surprised onlookers at the New York auto show today by unveiling a new Camaro Z/28, a built-for-the-racetrack performance coupe.
The car will have a small-block V-8 engine that produces 500 hp and 470 pounds-feet of torque. General Motors will begin production of the Z/28 late this year in Oshawa, Ontario. It is expected to go on sale early next year. The previous Camaro Z/28 was last produced in 2002.

The Z/28 is so geared for the track that engineers stripped every ounce of weight they could from the car, Reuss said. They left just one speaker -- and that was only because it was required to keep the car street legal, so the driver can hear the seat belt chime.
The first Camaro Z/28 was introduced in 1967 to compete in the Sports Car Club of America's Trans-Am 2 class.
Reuss said the new Z/28 will help maintain Chevy's momentum in performance car sales.
U.S. sales of the Camaro totaled 84,391 last year, down 4 percent from 2011. Camaro sales in 2012 topped those of the Ford Mustang, which totaled 82,995, and the Dodge Challenger, with deliveries of 43,119.
The 2014 Camaro
Chevrolet today also introduced a refreshed 2014 base Camaro and SS model with a revised front fascia, larger grille and racing-inspired seats. Chevrolet says the 2014 Camaro represents the most significant redesign since the introduction of the fifth-generation Camaro as a concept car in 2006.
The new 2014 Camaro line will arrive at Chevrolet dealers later in 2013.
