Rusty Drewing, a partner at Joe Machens Dealerships in Columbia, Mo., says his successful used-vehicle operation is built on its ability to acquire the right inventory at the right price.
So he searches online remarketing channels for good deals and scours Web sites such as Craigslist for vehicles for sale by private owners. And over the years, he has built a reputation in his community for buying vehicles from consumers even if they don't buy new or used vehicles from him.
Drewing says his eight-store group's "leave no stone unturned" philosophy to acquiring used vehicles helped it increase used-vehicle sales 24 percent to 12,857 last year, or an average of 1,607 used vehicles per dealership.
"We spend extensive time making sure we purchase vehicles on the money," says Drewing, who owns and manages the group with his father, Gary, who is president.
