NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Axion Power International Inc., a battery producer in New Castle, Pa., was awarded a $150,000 grant by the U.S. Department of Energy to commercialize its lead-carbon batteries for use with stop-start systems in cars and trucks. If the company successfully completes the first phase of development, it will be eligible next year for an additional grant of $1 million.
