Mercedes-Benz will drop the slow-selling R-class wagon from its U.S. lineup after the 2012 model year but will keep building it in Alabama for export.
Through the first two months of this year, U.S. Mercedes dealers sold 293 R-class units, one-third less than during the first two months of 2011. Last year, U.S. R-class sales dropped 19 percent to 2,385.
Demand for the R class, which debuted in the United States in September 2005, is much higher in foreign markets. Mercedes will sell the wagon in Mexico, Canada and China until at least 2015.
