LOS ANGELES -- Buyers of Hyundai's youth-oriented Veloster coupe soon will have more accessories to buy at dealerships to personalize their ride.
Hyundai dealers will have about 30 Veloster accessories to sell in the second quarter, compared with the 12 to 15 accessories Hyundai has for most cars.
Mike O'Brien, vice president of product planning for Hyundai Motor America, said the brand plans to roll out more accessories on other models.
"Veloster is the first product where you'll see a much broader effort on accessorization, not just at launch but after the vehicle is on the market," he said.
Dealers currently sell the usual accessories for the Veloster, such as wheel locks, floor mats and mud guards.
In the second quarter, Veloster body graphics, interior lighting kits, beefier stereos and other accessories will arrive at dealerships.
Accessories will also be a priority for the Elantra Coupe when it debuts this year, O'Brien said. Cool parts and customization are important for coupe buyers, O'Brien said.
"It's really a prioritization of individuality. It's someone saying 'I want to be different,'" O'Brien said.
Cherie Watters, general manager of South Bay Hyundai in Torrance, Calif., said she sees that with Veloster customers already.
"It's the younger generation that's really attracted to that car, so everybody wants to personalize it," Watters said.
John Patterson, owner of Tustin Hyundai in Tustin, Calif., said the Veloster provides the biggest opportunity to sell accessories that he has had as a Hyundai dealer.
Said Patterson, "The person who's driving that car is exactly who you think it would be: sub-26-year-old guys and gals, and they want to trick it out."
