LAS VEGAS -- Mike Shaw is the 2012 Time Dealer of the Year.
Shaw, 65, was scheduled to receive the honor Saturday, Feb. 4, at the National Automobile Dealers Association convention here. He is dealer principal of Mike Shaw Chevrolet-Saab in Denver.
Fifty auto dealers were nominated.
The program, sponsored by Time magazine in association with Ally Financial and in cooperation with NADA, honors franchised new-vehicle dealers for exceptional performance in their dealerships and distinguished community service. A panel of faculty members from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan selected four finalists and then a national winner.
Shaw earned a degree in business management at Texas A&M University. He later was an officer in the U.S. Army and spent a year in Vietnam. After returning home, he managed and owned a string of dealerships before opening Mike Shaw Chevrolet-Saab in 1994. He now has six other dealerships in Colorado, Louisiana and Texas. He also sells Toyota, Kia, Honda, Subaru, Buick and GMC vehicles. Shaw's two sons also work for the business.
For 17 years, Shaw has been involved in many projects and organizations, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Urban League of Metropolitan Denver, Make-A-Wish Foundation, AIDS Walk Colorado, Food Bank of the Rockies, the American Cancer Society, Crime Stoppers, Executive Women International and Seniors Inc.
Among other awards, he was presented with the Scouting Vale La Pena! Service Award by the Boy Scouts of America for service to Hispanic-American young people.
The other finalists were:
-- Tim Ilderton, 61, of Ilderton Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep-Ram in High Point, N.C.
-- Judith Schumacher-Tilton, 65, of Schumacher Chevrolet in Little Falls, N.J.
-- Morrie Wagener, 74, of Morrie's Automotive Group in Minnetonka, Minn. c
