Increases in import and premium luxury vehicle purchases helped AutoNation Inc.post a 7 percent increase in new vehicle unit sales last month.
New vehicle sales for January totaled 15,966, the nation’s largest dealer group said in a statement today.
Imports accounted for more than half of those sales -- 8,097 units -- last month, a 9 percent increase compared to January 2011.
Domestic vehicle sales rose 4 percent to 4,894 units.
AutoNation’s dealers sold 2,975 premium luxury units last month, up 8 percent compared to January 2011.
Last week, AutoNation reported a 3.1 percent increase in fourth quarter net income of $69.4 million. For the full year, revenue jumped 11 percent to $13.8 billion and gross profit per new vehicle rose just over 2 percent in the quarter to $2,451.
