Chrysler Group will expand its plant in Saltillo, Mexico, to assemble a Ram-branded version of the Fiat Ducato commercial van for North America, the company said last week. The revised Ducato will arrive in 2013.
It will compete with such vehicles as the Ford Econoline and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
The van's European styling may be redone to appeal to North American tastes, Chrysler officials said.
The automaker also will bring a Ram version of the smaller Fiat Doblo to North America and may offer the larger Fiat Daily commercial van.
A Chrysler spokesman would not confirm the size of the investment in Saltillo, but sources in Mexico said it is expected to be about $500 million.
Chrysler already operates a truck assembly plant, a stamping plant, and two engine plants in Saltillo.
