Rhett Ricart is a firm believer in certified programs for used vehicles.
The CEO of the family-owned Ricart Automotive Group in Columbus, Ohio, sells late-model used Ford, Nissan, Mazda, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Kia cars and trucks under their manufacturers' certified used-vehicle programs.
But he doesn't stop there. Just about everything else on his used-vehicle lot is sold under the Motor Trend Certified program, which covers vehicles that don't qualify for the factory programs with a six-month or 7,500-mile warranty.
Ricart started the certification program last year. He credits it for helping to boost his used-vehicle unit sales 19 percent so far this year over 2010. His gross profit per unit is up $198, he adds.
"It's been a tremendous success," Ricart says of the Motor Trend Certified program, which is affiliated with the auto enthusiast magazine.
Ricart and a growing number of dealers are embracing certification programs for older used vehicles that cover a wide range of brands.
