Even after Bob Stempel was unceremoniously relieved of duty as CEO of General Motors in 1992, he remained one of the automaker's biggest supporters. He was a GM man to the end.
Stempel also remained true to his calling as an engineer. After leaving GM, he stoked his interest in the development of battery technology and electric vehicles, even serving for a while as CEO of Energy Conversion Devices Inc. in suburban Detroit.
Bob Stempel was an innovator and a gentleman. He will be missed.
