Nissan North America will postpone its annual May Tent Sale this year because of the earthquake in Japan.
The event typically boosts May's sales by about 10 percent, says Al Castignetti, Nissan Division vice president for sales and marketing.
Nissan has not decided when to run the 2011 sale, he said. It could be as early as June or as late as October.
Nissan has ample inventories at the moment, despite major production interruptions in Japan and North America. Brian Carolin, Nissan North America senior vice president for sales and marketing, says Nissan has 32,000 more vehicles in inventory this month than it did in April 2010 because it built stocks in anticipation of robust sales.
But Castignetti says the timing is wrong for a major national sales event: "With all the uncertainty in the market, it just doesn't make sense to have a tent event."
