Hot brands make for hot marketing execs, and those are always in demand.
Last year General Motors hired Joel Ewanick away from Nissan, where he had just been lured from high-flying Hyundai. Last week Volkswagen nabbed Subaru marketing chief Tim Mahoney to be its chief U.S. product and marketing officer.
Subaru and Hyundai were two of only three brands to improve U.S. sales in the 2009 crash. And last year Subaru's sales climbed 22 percent while the industry grew 11 percent.
It is the second time Mahoney, 54, has left Subaru. He went to Porsche Cars North America in 1999 and returned in 2006. In the mid-90s he was part of the team that turned around Subaru by making all U.S. vehicles all-wheel drive. He also launched memorable ads featuring Paul "Crocodile Dundee" Hogan in the '90s.
At VW, Mahoney will be responsible for the strategic direction of the brand's product planning and promotional efforts.
