To the Editor:
Keith Crain's Dec. 13 commentary asked, "Do we really need backup cameras?"
Absolutely not. I have a vehicle so equipped with a large monitor, and it is good for one thing only: squeezing into a tight parking space. Otherwise, it is useless, especially during sunny days as you can't see anything on the monitor because of the glare. (Think of digital camera monitors.)
Saving children's lives with backup cameras is a fantasy since steering a car by looking only at the monitor -- which you would have to do to see a small child -- is very difficult.
Let's continue to look over our shoulders when backing up. It's far safer than relying on a backup camera.
