Mercedes-Benz said today it will join “the race for the best supersports car with electric drive” starting in 2013, when the company plans to launch the battery-powered Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E Cell.
The “supersports car with electric drive” is a category of one today, provided you consider the Tesla Roadster a supersports car. The Tesla Roadster debuted in June 2008.
The category is growing, though, with Audi, BMW, Ferrari and Porsche all working on hybrids and electric vehicles -- no doubt along with other high-end brands.
The gull-winged Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E Cell made its U.S. debut today at the Detroit auto show. Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche joked that the zero-emission car, which is built with lightweight materials such as carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, fulfills two of the most common New Year's resolutions: quit smoking and lose weight.
