Last week the sort-of-retired Bob Lutz added a new gig to his schedule as memoirist and TV commentator. General Motors' former vice chairman will chair the advisory council of Current Motor Co., a Michigan-based startup that has developed an electric motor scooter.
Lutz, 78, a longtime motorcycle enthusiast, said the Current scooters "show tremendous promise and are fun to ride." But he may have been embellishing ever so slightly when he claimed: "I've dedicated my career to bringing electric vehicles to the mainstream."
True, Lutz did push GM to build the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid near the end of his career. But in the three preceding decades we seem to recall that rubber-burning performance cars -- think Dodge Viper, Chevrolet Corvette ZR1-- were a big part of the Lutz resume, too.
