GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Peter Cook, who ran two successful import auto distributorships, died Nov. 28. He was 96.
In the 1940s, Cook went to work at Import Motors Ltd. in Grand Rapids. In the early 1950s he became president of the company and an exclusive distributor of Volkswagen, Porsche and Audi vehicles in Michigan and Indiana.
In 1977, Cook formed Transnational Motors Inc., which operated as Mazda Great Lakes and distributed Mazdas in six states.
In 1980, Volkswagen of America bought out Import Motors.
Cook continued as chairman of Mazda Great Lakes until 2000, when Ford Motor Co. bought it out.
