LOS ANGELES -- Hyundai's new Veloster sporty coupe features a sedan-like front-hinged rear passenger door, wheels pushed to the corners and rear hatch that hinges above the heads of passengers in its second-row seats.
A photo of the car released this week by Hyundai shows the car with its doors open, highlighting the rear passenger-side door. Other recent coupes, such as the Mazda RX-8, have used suicide doors.
The Veloster is powered by a 1.6-liter direct-injection gasoline engine producing about 140 hp, with a fuel economy rating estimated by the company at 40 mpg.
Hyundai CEO John Krafcik said the Veloster, which is scheduled to be released this year as a 2012 model, will have sporty driving dynamics similar to those of a Mini Cooper.
The Veloster will debut on Monday at the Detroit auto show.
