FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Former auto dealer Gary Fronrath died Dec. 20. He was 66.
Fronrath began his auto career as a used-car salesman in South Florida. He and his partners later built their own used-car business.
In time, Fronrath went to work at a new-car dealership, and in 1976 he opened a Chevrolet dealership in Fort Lauderdale.
Fronrath later became a financial backer of several of his employees, helping them to buy dealerships in Florida and become dealers themselves. The stores eventually were sold to the operator/partners or to others.
In 1996, Fronrath sold Gary Fronrath Chevrolet to Mike Maroone, who is now COO of AutoNation Inc. The store is now owned by AutoNation.
Fronrath retired in 2006.
