LOS ANGELES – Honda will unveil a concept version of the redesigned 2012 Civic at the Detroit auto show in January.
The Civic is arriving in showrooms in March, six months later than a typical five-year product cadence. It is expected to have sportier styling to inject new life into the Honda brand.
Through November, Honda has sold 231,955 Civics, making it the No. 4 top-selling car in America, slightly trailing the Toyota Corolla/Matrix combination as the best-selling compact car line, though well ahead of the Ford Focus.
Honda had to reconsider its original Civic plans when the Lehman Brothers collapse triggered the global recession. Originally envisioned to be larger the current model, the 2012 Civic should be about the same size as the outgoing version.
The subcompact segment is undergoing a transformation in the next six months. In addition to the new Civic, the Focus and Hyundai Elantra are receiving redesigns, while Chevrolet is introducing the slightly larger Cruze.
