SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Jim Bass, a longtime Ford dealer, died Aug. 20. He was 97.
Bass began his automotive career in 1947 when he took a job with Ford Motor Co. He worked first in Houston and later Dallas as a liaison between the manufacturer and dealers. He stayed with the company for 15 years.
In the early 1960s, he began a partnership with Ford dealer Lee Jarmon at Bass-Jarmon Ford in San Angelo. Later, he bought out Jarmon and renamed the store Jim Bass Ford. He added Nissan in 2002. He never officially retired.
His son, John Bass, and grandson, Jim Bass III, now run Jim Bass Ford-Lincoln-Mercury-Mazda-Nissan.
