Thanks to Keith Crain for a thoughtful and sobering piece on electric vehicles ("They must know something we don't," Oct. 4).
To me, it really looks like a bandwagon, politically driven indeed. Politicians are being sold the fiction that you can overcome energy supply and greenhouse gas challenges by technological magic, without constraints on vehicle size or the amount of driving.
Electric drive will come -- one day, once electricity is decarbonized. But that's some distance away, and it will be very expensive.
I agree that range is not the real issue, at least for multivehicle families who are prepared to accept specialized small commuter cars. But one can do that and get the fuel economy and greenhouse gas benefits with existing technologies.
