Dave Belknap is a stickler for rooting out waste.
That's why the fixed-operations manager at Gault Auto Group in Endicott, N.Y., set up an assembly line of employees who find parts on shelves and hustle them to service technicians in minutes.
"Technicians are best at turning wrenches and repairing cars; they need things quickly," Belknap says. "Why make them stand at a window to get parts when we can put in a system to help them?"
He says the dealership's service department sells time, and the parts department is set up to help the service department make the maximum return on investment. Gault Auto operates BMW, Chevrolet and Toyota-Scion franchises in Endicott and Volkswagen and Audi in Binghamton, N.Y.
Belknap has been in charge of fixed operations at Gault Auto for four years, overseeing its service and parts departments, body shop, call center and vehicle-preparation area.
