When it comes time for auto execs to present their car-guy credentials, a really good "I drive like a maniac" anecdote is as convincing as, say, a certificate from Bob Bondurant or Skip Barber.
It turns out that Hyundai CEO John Krafcik has a pretty good tale to tell.
USA Today noted last week that while he was a midlevel executive at Ford in the early 1990s, Krafcik was roaring down Interstate 94 near Detroit when Bob Lutz, then the product kingpin at Chrysler, zipped past him in a Dodge Spirit R/T. Krafcik stomped on his Taurus SHO and a wild chase ensued at speeds well north of 100 mph. Each passed the other a couple of times.
"It just became ridiculous," Krafcik told the newspaper.
But he also says that long-ago duel of the suits illuminated something about his personality: "I hate being passed."
