Nissan is changing the layout of its Smyrna, Tenn., assembly plant, left, to build the electric Leaf sedan and is building a plant nearby to produce lithium ion battery modules for the car. The automaker tapped a low-interest $1.4 billion Department of Energy loan to help pay for the project.
