This just in: Carlos Ghosn has not left the building.
Auto industry observers around the planet went into high alert Wednesday night in reaction to an Internet posting that said Ghosn was stepping down as CEO of Nissan and that Carlos Tavares, chairman of Nissan Americas, would succeed him in Japan.
No one seemed more surprised than Tavares himself. He dismissed the report -- all of it -- as utterly untrue.
The purported scoop came from a Web site maintained by a commercial real estate broker in Brentwood, Tenn., near Nissan's U.S. headquarters. It specializes in articles about local retailers and events.
Broker Todd McCalla posted his Ghosn-Tavares report, citing "our Nashville and Portuguese sources" (Tavares is a native of Portugal) above an item headlined "Franklin Bicycle Store Opens." He then circulated the Ghosn story to media organizations.
Despite Tavares' denial -- which was seconded by a Nissan spokesman -- McCalla said he sticks by the story.
