Camaro has already won a sales title -- sort of. But that could be short-lived.
The Chevrolet sports car outsold the Mustang in the 12 months after it was introduced. From April 2009 through March 2010, Chevrolet sold 82,405 Camaros to Ford's 72,669 Mustangs. The Camaro outsold the Mustang in April, too.
But Ford's 2011 Mustang is threatening to deprive Camaro of its first calendar-year victory over Mustang since 1985. The 2011 Mustang came out in April, and Ford's sports car beat Camaro 10,225 to 8,931 last month.
The 2011 Mustang has new 3.7-liter V-6 and 5.0-liter V-8 engines. The V-6 gets 305 hp, 280 pounds-feet of torque and 31 mpg on the highway, compared with the 2010 V-6's 210 hp and 24 mpg highway. The V-8 produces 412 hp and 390 pounds-feet of torque while getting 26 mpg.
The 3.6-liter V-6 Camaro produces 304 hp and 273 pounds-feet of torque and gets 29 mpg highway. The 6.2-liter V-8 gets up to 426 hp, 420 pounds-feet of torque and 25 mpg highway.
