Automakers slashed production as sales plunged. Suppliers shed plants and entire divisions as they sought to concentrate on core businesses.
Last year was painful. And size was no protection for parts makers.
A look at the largest losers -- in a year when all but a handful of suppliers saw sales fall -- shows that the biggest gave up the most. The accompanying tables, taken from the Automotive News ranking of the top 150 suppliers in North America, focus on the top 50.
Eight of the 10 largest sales declines in dollar terms came at suppliers ranked in the top 10. Gainers, meanwhile, were scarce. Only eight of the top 50 suppliers on the list posted sales increases in 2009.
