You know how you hear something that seems just too far out? Then you hear it again and again, and far out begins to seem plausible?
That has been my response to the notion of pod vehicles -- the little enclosed Segway things that automakers display periodically, only to be met with general bewilderment.
Last week, at the Moving Ahead sustainable transportation conference at Ohio State University, two carmakers were talking pods, or something much like them.
John Viera, Ford Motor Co.'s sustainability guy, described a future in which most people move around in lightweight Web-guided electric vehicles. His Chrysler counterpart, Robert Lee, flatly predicted that "driving will be illegal." Cities will be so congested that only self-driving vehicles will be allowed.
