CHARLESTON, S.C -- Daimler Vans USA is expanding its Sprinter model line with the addition of a passenger van that seats up to 16 people. The van is designed for hotel shuttle service, paratransit and other applications.
The vehicle can be ordered directly from a Mercedes-Benz or Freightliner dealership that sells Sprinter vans. Sales begin this summer. Pricing has not been announced.
Dan Barile, a Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman, said four different interior configurations will be offered including a model with a wheelchair lift that can handle up to 8 passengers. Daimler Vans is a subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz USA.
The Sprinter is a full-sized, heavy-duty van that is offered in 2500 and 3500 models. Semi-knockdown kits are assembled at Daimler Vans USA's plant in Ladson, S.C. The plant also assembles cargo, chassis cab and 12-passenger passenger vans. The shuttle van conversion is handled by Daimler Buses North America, Greensboro, N.C.
The shuttle van is offered in four 15- and 16-passenger configurations, plus driver. The van has an electrically operated split passenger doors in place of a sliding door. Rather than dealing with a separate conversion company, the Mercedes and Freightliner dealers offer one-stop shopping, Barile said.
The vehicle is powered by a 188-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V-6, with 325 pounds feet of torque.
Selected Mercedes-Benz dealers have been selling cargo, chassis cab and passenger van Sprinter models since January 1. Daimler terminated contracts with nearly 350 Dodge dealers last year. The van has been sold by selected Freightliner dealers since 2001.
