Sales of large trucks rose in February for the second month in a row. This time, sales of the biggest rigs increased, too.
Sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks rose 6 percent in February from a year earlier to 17,035 units. A 3 percent gain in January was the first increase in three years.
In February, sales of Class 8 trucks, the largest size, climbed 19 percent to 7,427. Class 6 sales jumped 26 percent to 2,247, but sales of all other sizes fell.
Sales of Class 7 trucks fell 15 percent to 2,771 units. Class 5 sales slid 13 percent to 1,513. Class 4 sales decreased 1 percent to 3,077.
International led all brands in February with sales of 4,548, up 19 percent from a year earlier. Freightliner's 30 percent sales jump, to 3,908 in February, pushed it to No. 2, ahead of year-earlier No. 2 Ford Motor Co. Ford's sales rose 14 percent to 3,680.
Nos. 4 and 5, Peterbilt and Kenworth, posted single-digit sales drops.
