In another sign the economic freeze is thawing, executive pay is getting hot again.
AutoNation Inc. doubled CEO Mike Jackson's pay in 2009 to $5.16 million. Jackson's $1.15 million base salary was unchanged, but he got a $1.7 million bonus for 2009, the company said last week.
AutoNation COO Michael Maroone was paid $3.98 million in 2009, up from $2.26 million in 2008. Maroone received a $1.11 million bonus and stock option awards. AutoNation had awarded no executive bonuses in two years.
Meanwhile, Ford Motor Co. announced last week that CEO Alan Mulally earned $1.4 million in salary but did not take a bonus. Still, his total compensation was $17.9 million because of stock-based awards. Ford stock closed near $14 last week, up from its 52-week low of $2.38.
