Bob Lutz knows just the kind of guy General Motors needs to fill the CEO job. Knows him well, in fact.
Over the years, GM's vice chairman has been a high-flier at Ford, BMW, Chrysler and GM. Although he never has had the top title at any of those companies, it's doubtful he ranked second to anyone in self-confidence.
At the Detroit auto show, Lutz, who turns 78 in February, was asked whether he was on the search committee that's beating the bushes for GM's new CEO. His response: "I'm not, because I'd probably have a tendency to say, 'Why search when you have me?' "
Anyway, said Lutz: "I don't think it would sit well with the public or with our new shareholders if a 78-year-old were made CEO. ... These guys were supposed to rejuvenate themselves, not go geriatric."
