In a statement Sunday, General Motors Co. said the Cruze will be powered by a new family of small engines that can deliver as much as 40 mpg. A turbocharged, Ecotec 1.4–liter I-4 -- standard on LT and LTZ models -- will carry 138 horsepower. The LS model will have a 1.8-liter version of the engine. Six-speed automatic and manual transmissions will be offered.

The automaker says it has invested more than $350 million to build the Cruze in Lordstown, Ohio.
Chevrolet lists competitors as the Civic, Corolla -- the two best-selling cars of their size in the United States -- as well as the Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra and Nissan Sentra.
