In profiling the "50 Visionary Dealers" in this issue, we were reminded that almost all new-vehicle dealers are inventive and intrepid individuals.
It's part of the job description. The creative ideas that sustain the retail car business (especially in years like this one) are usually just blue sparks off the dynamo of daily operations. Dealers learn in the trenches. The brainstorms follow naturally.
There have been scores of visionaries among the thousands of successful car dealers who have been in business since William Metzger opened the first store in Detroit 112 years ago. Although we focused on just 50 (52, actually, since two are father-son combos) our section is a celebration of all dealers.
