During his long and colorful career in auto retailing, Ed Mullane called Ford Motor Co. executives "barbarians," "dictators," "arrogant," "greedy" and "full of crap."
And Mullane made his living selling Ford cars and trucks.
Over three decades as founder and president of the Ford Dealers Alliance, Mullane aggressively advocated the interests of dealers, especially the 1,700 or so retailers who joined his organization.
Mullane regularly challenged Ford on such issues as warranty reimbursement, fleet subsidies, sales strategies and overdealering. He was a tireless proponent of tougher franchise laws to protect dealers against what he called factory encroachment.
