TOKYO -- Falling sales and an unfavorable exchange rate hurt July-September earnings at Japanese automakers.
Mazda Motor Corp. eked out an operating profit of ¥5.93 billion ($65.9 million) after three straight quarters of losses, but the profit tumbled 82 percent from a year earlier. Mazda's net income collapsed 95 percent to $7.9 million.
Honda Motor Co.'s net income fell 56 percent to $600.6 million. Mitsubishi Motors Corp. swung to a net loss of $110.8 million from a year-earlier net profit of $27.5 million.
