Land Rover's products are a mix of Ford and BMW platforms that predate Land Rover's sale last year to India's Tata Motors Ltd.
The Ford influence will be felt for years to come, but the BMW platform will disappear when the big Range Rover SUV is redesigned in 2011. A compact Range Rover will debut in two years, likely sharing the LR2 platform.
Here are highlights of Land Rover's product plans.
LR2: No major changes are planned.
LR4: The reskinned, re-engineered LR3 will be renamed LR4 when it goes on sale this year. The SUV has a new 375-hp, 5.0-liter V-8 engine; a more luxurious interior; and improved handling.
Range Rover compact: A compact SUV will be added to the line in 2011. The new model will be based on the LRX concept car that debuted at the 2008 Detroit auto show.
Range Rover: This fall the big SUV gets a new 5.0-liter V-8 engine with 375-hp normally aspirated and 510-hp supercharged versions. The new V-8 replaces 4.4-liter normally aspirated and 4.2-liter supercharged V-8s. The exterior features a new grille.
A redesign of the Range Rover is expected in 2011. The SUV will shift from a BMW platform to the LR4's underpinnings.
Range Rover Sport: This year the Sport model received the same engine upgrades and exterior freshening as the Range Rover. The interior also was upgraded. A redesign is expected in 2013.
