The novelty of the two-seat city car may be wearing thin. U.S. sales are weak. But Daimler AG, which owns Smart, is looking at several ways to support the franchise with new product.
ForTwo: No major changes are planned; a redesign is possible for 2013.
Electric car: California electric-vehicle manufacturer Tesla Motors announced this year that it is developing an electric version of the Smart. Tesla said it has a contract to produce an initial 1,000 vehicles. One hundred are being tested in the United Kingdom.
ForFour: The four-seat ForFour was killed in 2006, two years after it was introduced. Daimler is considering a new four-seat model but this time perhaps in collaboration with another manufacturer. Daimler is talking with Renault about sharing the platform of the French carmaker's Twingo.
