The Mini Roadster concept broke cover today at the Frankfurt motor show, and the two-seat soft-top is expected to join its coupe counterpart in production.
The roadster borrows the 1.6-liter twin-scroll turbocharged engine from the Mini Cooper S, and it makes 175 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. The overboost function pushes output to 192 lb-ft.
The roadster measures 146.2 inches in length, 66.3 inches in width and 53.4 inches in height. As usual, Mini says the extra-short overhangs contribute to a go-kart drive character.
The front end is similar to that of the Mini convertible up to the A-pillars, where the windshield is raked low and at a sharper angle, making for a chopped look. There is a small luggage compartment in the back, with room for 8.8 cubic-feet of storage.
The inner part of the grille matches the body color, and there are hood stripes to set off the appearance.
Mini says the roof takes only a few seconds to open or close. But it's not a power cover, in a nod to the purist nature of the car, and that also helps reduce weight. A single-piece aluminum bar that spans the width of the interior can shoot up in 150 milliseconds in the event of a rollover.
The inside is typical Mini, with the tach behind the steering wheel and the speedometer in the upper part of the central console. The curious dial that displays how long the roof has been open also is on the roadster.
There's also a nature guard function to tell the driver how to save fuel through pedal position relative to speed, and a gravity indicator displays g-force. Buddy radar, which indicates if other Mini motorists are nearby, is another feature on the Roadster.
