New-vehicle sales in Canada in August fell 8.0 percent from a year earlier to 135,409 units. Sales for the first eight months were down 15.6 percent to 996,257.
General Motors Co. was the top seller in August despite a 27.8 percent drop in sales, to 23,054. GMC sales rose 14.8 percent to 5,665. It was the only GM brand to report an increase.
Ford Motor Co. was the No. 2 seller, up 7.2 percent to 22,693. Sales for third-place Toyota, dragged down by weak Toyota brand car sales, dropped 21.4 percent to 18,239. Ford and Toyota swapped positions from their August 2008 rank.
Hyundai-Kia Automotive jumped to No. 4 from No. 6 in August 2008, as sales climbed 32.3 percent to 15,090. Hyundai division sales surged 38.4 percent; Kia sales rose 20.6 percent.
Chrysler Group's sales slid 7.2 percent to 14,432. Honda Motor Co. rounded out the top six -- those with sales of at least 10,000 vehicles. Honda's sales fell 17.6 percent to 12,218.
