Former Volkswagen and Mini marketing executive Kerri Martin will become chief marketing officer on Aug. 20 for electric car and battery firm Coda Automotive.
Martin, 39, worked for Volkswagen of America until 2007, most recently as director of brand innovation and marketing communications. She will help Coda prepare for the fall 2010 launch of its electric sedan, the company announced today.
Martin joined Volkswagen in 2005 after a stint as director of marketing communications for Mini USA, where she had worked since 2000. Since leaving Volkswagen, she has worked for Goosebumps Brand Consulting in the San Francisco Bay area.
Coda, of Santa Monica, Calif., was launched in June as an offshoot of Miles Electric Vehicles, which makes neighborhood electric vehicles for fleets.
Coda says Chinese automaker Harbin Hafei Automotive will provide the sedans chassis, and says lithium-ion battery packs will come from Chinese Tianjin Lishen Battery.
Coda also applied for a U.S. Department of Energy grant to make batteries in the United States, but the company did not receive a share of the $2.4 billion in grants the government announced last week. California electric-vehicle startup Tesla Motors received a promise of $465 million this year.
Coda says it has $40 million in seed money, most of it from Angeleno Group of Los Angeles, a green venture capital group. Daniel Weiss, a partner at Angeleno Group, has said the group is ready to inject the next round of financing.
