Ford Motor Co.s Volvo unit is launching an expanded warranty program for vehicles purchased through June.
Volvos Safe + Sound program extends the warranty and included scheduled maintenance on 2009 models to 5 years/60,000 miles, from 4 years/50,000 miles.
For the first time, Volvo also is including wear-and-tear coverage -- offered only by BMW, but for 4 years/50,000 miles. The coverage includes brake pads and rotors and windshield wiper inserts. The program also gives owners five years of roadside assistance.
Tassos Panas, executive vice president of sales operations for Volvo Cars of North America LLC, said that if the program is successful, it will be extended through August when the 2010 models arrive. Only 2009s are covered -- which excludes the 2010 XC60 crossover, which went on sale in March.
He declined to disclose the cost of the Safe + Sound program but said Volvo is offering a service contract that brings vehicles purchased before the program to the same level of coverage for $2,995.
Volvo, which is being sold by Ford, sold 22,704 vehicles in the United States through May, down 42.1 percent from the same five-month period last year. Ford remains in talks with potential buyers but is in no hurry to close a deal, Volvo CEO Stephen Odell said last week.
