There is growing evidence that Ford Motor Co. is being transformed successfully in line with CEO Alan Mulally's vision of "One Ford." For example, the platform for the successors to the mid-sized Ford Fusion and Mondeo is being developed in Dearborn, Mich., which has engineering capacity. But the project is led by Ford of Europe product development head Joe Bakaj.
But Ford should remember that when Dearborn tried to engineer sedans for European roads in the past there were problems. The same was true when Europeans developed midrange products for North America. That is going way back. This time Ford seems to be on the right track.
Under Mulally, cross-Atlantic cooperation is the watchword. But the development team for the mid-sized car must heed market voices on both sides of the pond.
