LOS ANGELES — Mazda North American Operations has laid off about 110 employees.
Spokesman Jeremy Barnes says most of the layoffs occurred in the United States, which has about 800 employees.
Hit hardest was the headquarters in Irvine, Calif., which has 340 employees, most in sales and marketing. Barnes said other cutbacks were made at the r&d and design centers in Southern California.
In 2008, Mazda sales in the United States dropped 10.7 percent from 2007, to 263,949 units. In January, Mazda sales fell 27.3 percent from year-earlier levels while the overall U.S. market dropped 37.1 percent.
